JAZZ N CREOLE IN DOMINICA 2018 HIGHLIGHTS

One thing there is to know about Dominica is that any time you visit, there is always something to do in the Nature Isle of the Caribbean.  Whether it be going hiking through the valley of Desolation and unto the second largest boiling lake in the world or going to the river, beach or the the sulphur springs to relax, you will have fun. But one thing Dominica is known for is for the phenomenal events that it holds and this is what brings us here today. Jazz and Creole 2018 is one of the events that brings persons from all over the island, and globe by extension, for an unforgettable experience... yet can you believe that this event almost did not take place?!!!
Surely, I'm certain that most of you guys could have possibly heard of one of the world strongest hurricanes passing through the Nature Isle, leaving it in utter dismay on September the 18th 2017. This is why one of the greatest events to be held in Dominica was cancelled; the World Creole Music Festival and it almost spilled over to this year's Jazz and Creole, 7 months after. When April came around, all hopes of having Jazz n Creole was at an all time zero... but as fate would have it, in the early days of May, hope and share will brought the organizers together and pushed through the obstacles for the event to be held on May the 20th. What may have seemed to be somewhat of a dead letter was brought back to life and in fabulous fashion as well! With the likes of Michele Henderson(Dominica), Kenny Mohammad(Diaspora), Xavier Strings(Trinidad), Extasy Band(Dominica) and much more, put on a great show so a round of applause goes out to all those who made it possible.

This event to us here at BrBpTV, and I'm sure to the many who were gathered at the Fort Shirley National Park here in Portsmouth, felt that this year was the best Jazz and Creole held so far! Despite mother nature's plight against us.... We still won! This event continues to bring persons from all ages and walks of life together and even if to just share in the Ambience of the atmosphere, it provides a safe haven for the love of music and people.

Jazz festivals are increasingly becoming a favored must-go event, especially across the Caribbean Islands. The wonderful thing about this is, these types of events like in the Webisode below, is for everyone! This to me is the most exciting part because everyone gets to share in and hear a piece of Jazz and by piece, I mean a whole lot. The Jazz and Creole festival doesn't only come with the musical artistry of the artists alone but the atmosphere is also one of invitation to all walks, sizes and ages. Moreover, the young ones get exposed to this musical art forms at an early age and thus end up participating in and loving it. In this format, they gain an understand of jazz that can only increase as they get older so it's a win-win for everyone. The kiddies also get to be kids at the playground- bouncy castle set up for them to play in. Food is also a huge part of this Jazz and Creole celebration and there you will find some of the best meals but you don't have to take my word for it, I will let the patrons speak for themselves.
What has been taking place all over the world has been a quickly growing part of the Caribbean Dominican people for quite some time. From the onset of jazz music mixed with creole comes the live Jazz and Creole Festival 2016 taking place at the Fort Shirley National Park known as the Cabrits National Park in Portsmouth, Dominica. Jazz & Creole Festival in Dominica

Jazz... oh Jazz, where have you been? Obviously, it is about time you showed up yet again to the doors of the Portsmouth historical arena- The Cabrits National Park. Surely, we have not seen your face since last year this time around and have greatly missed you like that of a 'go-pwell' in its initial stages. :) Oh but a tangled web but here you are again and we are here to bask into your rhythmic grace. Your powerful melodies and pure intellectual insight does but many things but more importantly, brings persons from all over the land, and by extension the Caribbean, together as one. Jazz music, creole music is no stranger to the Caribbean population and has been digging its pipes into the hearts of the younger generation! What a positive role model you are and we are BrBpTV would like to say how much we appreciate you.


The sweet aroma of the wind instruments, the vibration on the percussion and of course the plucking and tucking of the string instruments are but music of its own! But! What is a Callaloo or a cantaloupe soup without without some juice to wash it down? The vocals of the powerful Caribbean Artists on display here today are none other than Michele Henderson of Dominica, Monty Alexander of Jamaica and the Haitian born, Beethova Obas, all made it to grace the stage of the Jazz & Creole Festival. In addition, the event also brought to the stage none other than local female vocalists, Joy Stoute, Mel-C, and Tiffany Mayne who all did mind blowing performances in addition to the steel pan group known as the Phase 5 band. Nothing but greatness hit the stage starting from 2:00PM going all through the evening up until minutes after 11:00PM. Take a look at the main features of the evening and be bombarded with the soothing sounds of Jazz and Creole.

Oh Jazz, the sweet sound of Jazz music. Where would we be without Jazz? Like seriously. As I think of it, I can actually hear jazz music playing so softly on the airwaves as the singer stands uprightly holding unto her microphone as she utters her first set of vocal notes and lyrical contents. That alone can bring forth the calm thoughtfulness of emotions to light. I have one word, "Wow!" as I sit comfortably in my chair soaking in all of this music emotions. Hmm... I had my eyes close for a bit there as I typed because it brought back great memories to me of that night of the Jazz Music Festival. Jazz is great and Jazz is cool especially to those who truly understand great music. In the Caribbean we are laced with all sorts and types of musical genres and this is as a result of the different mixtures of cultures formed by the different ethnicities and races of people. From Dance-hall to Reggae, Calypso to Bouyon, Hip-hop to Zouk, Candance to Blues and from Soca to Jazz, we have it all. Today we will be partaking in the musical genre and art of Jazz because it is very commonly known amongst all the Caribbean islands. Some of the best Jazz Musicians/Artists come from right here in the Caribbean. Artists like Ernest Ranglin, Marie-Claire Giraud, Hazel Scott, Michel Camilo and Andre Donawa, just to name a few. Jazz is a style of music that relaxes the mind, body and meets with the soul when it is played. The musical accompaniments set this nice, surreal tone to the environment and one can simply sit and bask in all of its glory. It's a wonderful atmosphere as you will see in a while.

The islands in the Caribbean where Jazz music is most commonly played and staged are in Jamaica, St. Croix, Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago. It horizons expanded unto Dominica in this episode through the voice of Marie-Claire Giraud, one of Dominica's very own Jazz/Opera musicians, amongst many others.
Tonight we will be focusing on her and her musical style as an opera singer which, by the way, is quite different to the usual Dominican styles in music which is mainly Calypso, Cadence and Bouyon.
